Traveling abroad in a strange country can be daunting. From communicating the native language, to understanding the currency, to connecting with family at home—it can be overwhelming and a bit frustrating to say the least. But don't worry, you can download these five free Apps, available on both iOs and Android, to help ease your travel woes and make your adventure super exciting and stress free.

Free WiFi Finder

While traveling abroad everyone has photos, status updates, and tweets they'd like to share with family and friends. The Free Wifi Finder for the iPhone and Android shows you where you can find free wireless connections in urban areas. You can search with a directory or simply enable the Wi-Fi scanner to locate the nearest hot spots.

Google Translate

Communicating in a foreign country can be challenging, and at times frightening. Not knowing where to navigate in a city, what to decipher on a menu, or how to simply communicate with retail or restaurant staff—ugh. Here's a solution: Use the Google Translate App for iPhone and Android. It can translate whole paragraphs of text or even the spoken word. Simply say a phrase in English and the App will repeat your words in the foreign language where traveling. Nice.

OANDA Currency Converter

Converting money can be quite a task, especially if you're not a math mathematician. I certainly am not. Trust me, the OANDA Currency Converter will come to your rescue! It easily converts all forms of currency and allows you to calculate your expenses on-the-go with the added ability to factor the typical ATM rate or credit card rate into the conversion.

Pack the Bag / Pack My Bag

Everyone who's packing to travel abroad has had those “pull your hair out and stuff the suitcase” moments. We all make paper lists on what to take, often forgetting important chargers and converters, etc. Here's the link to the Pack the Bag App for the iPhone and the Pack My Bag App for Android, which lets you swiftly create manageable checklists. Choose from 26 categories and select only the items that you want and need to take overseas. And of course, if you’re traveling with a gap year program or study abroad trip, make sure to cross-reference everything on the program's list.

Viber

Why pay high international data or phone rates when you don't have to? Here's an App that'll let you communicate for free with a Wi-Fi connection. All you need is for you and your contact list to download the App and have Wi-Fi on both ends to use Viber. It simply uses your Internet connection to send messages, make calls, take photos, or send video correspondence.

We all want to get the maximum enjoyment out of our travel experience. It's a good thing that there are so many Apps that can help guide us to achieve that.
